The State's Public Chemical Laboratory was founded in 1830 and was the first official chemical laboratory for the testing of food and products in Greece and was equipped with state of the art equipment. The Chemistry Museum is in operation since 1996 and is housed by the Stated Public Chemical Laboratory on Eleftheriou Venizelou Street. It is a reproduction of that first Chemical Lab that was founded in Chania with the initiative of Ioannis Vamvakas. The building was bombarded during the Second World War resulting in the destruction of several objects. Some of the pieces where salvaged from the ruins and are presently displayed in the Museum.
You can visit the museum on working days and hours since the employees of the General Chemical Lab have undertaken the responsibility of running the museum. For group visits you should call ahead.
