Maleme

Maleme is 16 kilometers west of Chania, right on the National Road towards Kasteli and is a beautiful coastal village with 700 residents.

It was a place of intense battles during the invasion of the German troops in May of 1941 due to its military airfield where German soldiers descended with parachutes.
It is a very developed tourist destination that many travelers choose as their destination.

The German military cemetery is worth visiting. It was created for the 4500 plus German soldiers and officers that lost their life in the Second World War.

About 16 kilometers south of Maleme you can visit the village of Deres with its incredible landscape. The village is built in a location filled with chestnut, walnut and olive trees. The Dekasimiotis River runs through the village.

Every May cultural events are organized in memoriam of the "Battle of Crete" that took place in May of 1941. A festival dedicated to Saint Anthony is held on the 17th of January.
There are many tavernas, restaurants, coffee shops and bars for food and drinks. The area also has a vivid nightlife.

Platanias

Platanias is 11 kilometers west of Chania right next to the National Road towards Kasteli and has 740 residents. The village is built along the coast and on the hillside – amphitheatrically - from where the view is magnificent.

The village is one of the most developed tourist resorts in Chania due to long beaches and its proximity to Chania.

There are several tavernas, restaurants, coffee shops and beach bars. The nightlife in Platanias leaves nothing wanted.

Agia Marina

Agia Marina is 9 kilometers west of Chania and is fully developed coastal tourist resort as are the neighboring villages of Stalos and Kato Stalos. Agia Marina has 1450 residents.

The church of Saint Marina, that the village was names after, is worth visiting and 1,5 kilometers away is "Nerospilia" an very interesting cave with stalagmites and stalactites that was used as a place of worship during the Minoan period.

If you wish to see wild Cretan goats, the famous kri-kri, you can visit the islet of Agii Theodori by way of the excursion boats form Chania or by private boat from Agia Marina. The visit requires a permit from the Forest Inspectorate because the islet is protected.

There are two festivals held in the village. The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is celebrated on the 25th of March and on the 17th of July the patron saint of the village Saint Marina is celebrated.

There are many tavernas and restaurants with good food, bars and coffee shops that offer drinks and small delicacies. Agia Marina is an attraction for tourists because of its many nightlife options like discos, bars, nightclubs with Greek and International music. The nights are definitely lively and colorful in Agia Marina.

Therissos

Therissos is located 16 kilometers south of Chania and is a small historic village with 110 residents.

This mountainous village is built on the foothills of the Lefka Ori mountain range and is renowned for its residents' endless battles with Turkish conquerors. This is where Eleftherios Venizelos began the 1905 revolution aiming to unify Crete with the rest of Greece.

The village has a majestic landscape that is worth visiting. The road from Chania passes through an impressive gorge next to a river. The drive is fascinating and is in itself an unforgettable experience. Near the entrance of the gorge, at the location "Tris Ekklissies" you can see the old stone bridge, the "Kamara" as the locals call it.

If you are interested in caves, don't miss the cave Sarakina or Elliniko, 2 kilometers north of the village. Traces of human activity have been found in this cave that trace back to the Neolithic, Minoan and Geometric periods.

If you wish to enjoy a scenic route take the road towards Zourvas , about 7 kilometers south of Therissos. In the location of "Paradissos" you can see an impressive tall standing rock. If you are there while it is raining you can also enjoy the waterfall that is formed from the rain running down the rock.

A big festival for the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is held in Therissos on the 15th of August.

There are some tavernas and traditional coffee shops in the area.
