61 kilometers Southwest of Chania is the village of Kantanos, a historical village that has 565 residents.

The village is built on an area full of olive trees that create a tranquil and quaint ambiance. It maintains its ancient name that many claim comes from Pre Greek times and means "the City of Victory".

The village had a vibrant presence during the Byzantine era as well as during the Venetian occupation. Like most of the villages on the island Kantanos participated in all the revolutions against the Ottoman occupancy. Loyal to their rebellious nature, the villagers held up a strong resistance during the Nazi invasion. The Nazis retaliated by completely destroying the village and killing all the villagers. Today when you visit the village square you can see memoriam plaques that are reminders of these atrocities.

Kantanos has many byzantine churches that date back to the 13th up to the 15th century that are noteworthy for their architecture, their hagiographies and their icons.

Every year in May, in memoriam of the Battle of Crete, several different events are held. The festival of Analipsi is held in the village every year.

The village has several tavernas and coffee shops for food and drink.
