The picturesque coastal village of Kalives is located 19 kilometers east of Chania and has 1289 residents.
It is a beautiful village with stone houses intertwined with the more modern buildings creating two separate neighborhoods with a characteristic island feel. The river Xides runs through the village and it too adds to the special feel of the village.
In the village square you can see the traditional watermill that was built in the beginning of the 20th century and is one of the oldest in the area.
If you wish to explore the area surrounding Kalives you can visit the traditional village of Macheri – that has been classified as a landmark with its stone houses and the open air theatre. Further down you will encounter the village of Neo Chorio where you find an oil press dating back to the Venetian era and an ancient well. Finally, 4 kilometers away you will reach the village of Armeni, a village with a breathtaking ambiance of plane and eucalyptus trees, running water and many streams, small stone bridges, an old watermill and the church of Saint Nikolas.
Don't miss the springs of the Zourpos River and the amazing beaches that form at the estuary of the river Kiliaris. In Kalives a celebration dedicated to Saint Paraskevi is held on the 26th of July and on the 20th of July in Armeni dedicated to Profitis Elias.
There are plenty of tavernas, restaurants, bars and traditional coffee shops in the area.
